The “EFMP Trick”: How to See Your Assignment Early in vMPF

by Roger · September 5, 2025

✈️ Why Airmen Use the EFMP Trick

Waiting for an official Assignment RIP can feel like forever. The EFMP trick is an unofficial workaround that lets you see your projected assignment in vMPF before your CSS or commander gives you the news.

No, you don’t need to be enrolled in EFMP to use it—it works for anyone with an assignment already loaded in MilPDS.

📋 Step-by-Step: How to Do the EFMP Trick

Log in to vMPF

  1. Go to:

Self-Service Actions → Assignments → Exceptional Family Member Program Application.

  2. Select:

Apply to Change or Cancel Assignment, Travel of EFMP Family Member Non-Recommended.

  3. Click Next (or Option 1 if shown).

    • If you have an assignment, you’ll see it listed.
    • If you don’t have an assignment, it’ll say “No projected assignment.”
  4. 🚨 Important: Don’t save or submit. Just back out to cancel the application.

🗣️ What Airmen on Reddit Say

“By page 3 it should tell you your assignment, then just close out and remove the application.”

r/AirForce

“You don’t need to be in EFMP. It just shows your gaining unit if an assignment is loaded.”

r/AirForce

“I’ve had it show 1–2 weeks before anything hit SURF or MilPDS.”

⚠️ Things to Keep in Mind

  • Don’t actually submit the EFMP application—you’re only clicking through.
  • Assignments may change until officially notified. Use this trick for planning, not final PCS decisions.
  • Always exit cleanly—remove any pending EFMP application so it doesn’t create confusion.

✅ Bottom Line

The EFMP trick is one of the most reliable ways to sneak a peek at your assignment before it hits your SURF or official notification. Thousands of Airmen have used it to get ahead on PCS planning, and for now—it still works.
