Air Force WAPS Test Prep for SSgt and TSgt
Build a simple study plan, use official materials first, then reinforce with trusted practice tools. This hub links the best WAPS resources in one place for Airmen and Guardians.
Quick Start
If you do nothing else, follow this order. It keeps your prep clean, realistic, and repeatable.
Lock Your Test Window
Get your projected test month, build a weekly rhythm, and pick a realistic daily study block.
Go Official First
Start with the official study guides so your notes match what the Air Force expects you to know.
Add Practice Tools
Reinforce weak areas with practice questions and review tools. Use them to validate, not replace, the source material.
Study Resources
Official first, then unofficial tools for reinforcement. These links are here so you do not waste time hunting.
Official (Start Here)
Use official sources as your foundation. If a tool conflicts with official guidance, default to official.
Unofficial (Reinforcement)
These are commonly recommended by Airmen online. Use them for practice and repetition after you’ve built your base.
Simple Study Schedules
Pick a schedule that matches your life. Consistency beats intensity.
8-Week Plan (Most Popular)
Best if you have limited time and need structure. Focus on a steady daily rhythm and targeted review.
- Weeks 1–4: Read and build notes (official-first)
- Weeks 5–6: Practice questions and weak-area drills
- Week 7: Review misses, tighten notes, re-test
- Week 8: Light review and confidence reps
12-Week Plan (Lower Stress)
Best if you want more breathing room. Fewer cram sessions, better long-term retention.
- Weeks 1–6: Official content + weekly recap
- Weeks 7–10: Practice + revisit weak areas
- Weeks 11–12: Review + test readiness checks

WAPS Testing Basics
A quick breakdown of how Air Force promotions testing works and what you’re actually being tested on.
What Airmen Should Know Before Testing
If you’re testing for Staff Sergeant or Technical Sergeant, these are the core concepts behind WAPS.
What is WAPS? +
The Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) is how the Air Force determines promotions to E-5 and E-6. Your score is compared against others in your AFSC, and the highest scores are selected based on quotas.
What is the PFE? +
The Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE) tests general Air Force knowledge such as history, leadership, customs, and policies. It is based on the Professional Development Guide (PDG / AFH 1).
What is the SKT? +
The Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT) measures job-specific knowledge for your AFSC. It is usually based on CDC material and official career field references.
What is the PDG? +
The Professional Development Guide (PDG), also known as AFH 1, is the official study source for the PFE. It covers Air Force heritage, structure, enlisted force development, and leadership fundamentals.
How is my WAPS score calculated? +
Your total score is a combination of test scores (PFE and SKT), performance evaluations, decorations, and time-based factors. Final selections depend on AFSC promotion quotas.
