2026 Pay Changes for Airmen: Raise + BAH + BAS and What to Check on Your LES

by Roger · January 4, 2026

A new year always brings pay changes, but military pay updates can feel confusing because several entitlements update at the same time.

For 2026, there are confirmed changes to basic pay, BAH, BAS, and CONUS COLA. This guide breaks down what changed, what it actually means for your paycheck, and how to quickly verify everything using your January LES.

Important: While these pay changes are effective January 1, 2026, Airmen will see them reflected on the end-of-month January LES.

📈 1) 2026 Basic Pay Raise (3.8%)

The 2026 basic pay raise is a 3.8% increase for all ranks, effective January 1.

What this means for you

Basic pay is the foundation of your paycheck. Even if none of your allowances change, this increase can affect:

  • Your taxable income

  • TSP contributions (if percentage-based)

  • Other deductions tied to base pay

Quick planning estimate

A fast way to estimate your new base pay:

New base pay ≈ old base pay × 1.038

You will usually see this increase reflected on your end-of-month January LES.

Your LES is always the final authority.

🏠 2) 2026 BAH Update (Average +4.2%)

Basic Allowance for Housing rates increased by an average of 4.2% for 2026. That average does not mean every location went up by the same amount.

Why BAH varies so much

Your BAH depends on:

  • Duty location

  • Pay grade

  • With or without dependents

  • Local housing market conditions

Two Airmen at different bases (or even different ZIP codes) can see very different changes.

BAH rate protection (critical to understand)

If you remain continuously eligible at the same duty location, individual rate protection generally prevents your personal BAH rate from decreasing due to market changes alone.

BAH can change if you have a qualifying event such as:

  • PCS

  • Change in dependency status

  • Reduction in grade

Updated BAH rates are effective January 1, but most members will see the change on the end-of-month January LES.

🍽️ 3) BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) 2026

BAS also updated for 2026.

Monthly BAS rates

  • Enlisted: $476.95

  • Officers: $328.48

  • BAS II: $953.90

BAS is intended to offset meal costs and is not location-based like BAH.

As with other annual pay updates, BAS changes are typically visible on the end-of-month January LES.

📍 4) CONUS COLA (Often Overlooked)

CONUS COLA is a taxable allowance paid to members assigned to certain high-cost locations within the continental United States.

Important notes:

  • Not all locations qualify

  • Eligibility and rates can change year to year

  • Some members may gain or lose COLA in 2026

If you are eligible, changes usually appear on the end-of-month January LES, depending on your location.

Always verify using the official CONUS COLA lookup tools and your LES.

🚗 5) Other Pay-Related Changes for 2026

  • Not everything that affects your wallet shows up as base pay or allowances.

    POV Mileage Rates

Mileage reimbursement rates for PCS and TDY travel were updated for calendar year 2026. If you are traveling for official duties, this can affect how much you are reimbursed.

Phone Savings Reduce a bill fast

📱 Quick win: lower your monthly phone cost

If rent or groceries climbed faster than your allowances, cutting a recurring bill is one of the fastest ways to create breathing room. Compare plans and keep your number.

Tip: Even $20 saved per month adds up over a year. Stack small wins.

✅ January LES Checklist (Use This)

When your end-of-month January LES posts, take 60 seconds to verify the following:

  • Compare December LES vs end-of-month January LES

  • Confirm base pay increased as expected

  • Verify BAH location, pay grade, and dependency status

  • Check BAS amount matches 2026 rates

  • If applicable, confirm CONUS COLA eligibility and rate

If something looks wrong, screenshot your LES and contact your servicing Finance office promptly.

✅ Finance FAQ

“Why didn’t my BAH go up?”

BAH is location-specific. Some areas increased more than others, and some remained flat due to market data.

“Can my BAH go down?”

Rate protection generally applies if you remain continuously eligible at the same location. PCS or status changes can affect your rate.

“What should I trust more, calculators or my LES?”

Always trust your LES. Calculators are planning tools only.

🎯 TFH Bottom Line

Your 2026 pay raise is real, but your personal outcome depends on your location, status, and allowances.

The smart approach:

  1. Wait for the end-of-month January LES

  2. Compare it against December

  3. Verify each entitlement

  4. Fix issues early with Finance

That one habit saves time, stress, and money.

VPN Travel and public Wi-Fi

🔒 Protect your logins on shared networks

TDY, PCS, and travel usually means hotel, airport, or shared Wi-Fi. A VPN adds a layer of protection when you’re on networks you don’t control.

Tip: Keep your accounts safer when you’re logging in from hotels, airports, and shared connections.
