Air Force Authorizes Duty Identifier Patches in New DAFI 36-2903 Update

by Roger · January 10, 2026

Effective immediately, the Department of the Air Force released a new Guidance Memorandum (DAFGM 2026-01) updating DAFI 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance.

This update reverses, clarifies, and tightens several policies introduced throughout 2025. Some changes restore previous standards. Others introduce new restrictions Airmen need to know now.

⚠️ Important:
This guidance memorandum is the official DAFGM and is effective immediately upon publication on January 9, 2026. It carries full authority under DAFI 36-2903 and supersedes any conflicting guidance issued in prior 2025 dress and appearance memorandums. Total Force Hub will continue monitoring for any future interim changes or a full DAFI rewrite and will update this article if additional official guidance is released.

🧵 The Big Picture

This is not a brand-new uniform overhaul.

Instead, the Air Force:

  • Reverses one major officer requirement

  • Brings back duty identifier patches with strict controls

  • Tightens rules on electronics, eyewear, and accessories

  • Standardizes appearance items that were inconsistently enforced

Below is a clear, no-fluff breakdown of what changed and what it means for Airmen.

🧩 Duty Identifier Patches Are Back (With Limits)

What Changed

Duty identifier patches are now authorized on the OCP uniform.

This is a full reversal from December 2025, when duty identifier patches were not allowed at all.

What You Need to Know

  • Patches must be:

    • Spice brown subdued

    • No more than 5 letters

    • No larger than the U.S. flag patch

  • Some career fields use black borders to enable quick identification (first responders, medical, security forces, etc.)

  • No extra graphics allowed
(no lightning bolts, aircraft silhouettes, or custom designs)

📌 Table 5.1 has been fully rewritten and now contains the final, approved list of:

  • Duty identifier patches

  • Qualification tabs

Unauthorized patches or incorrect wear will not be tolerated.

    👔 Officer OCP Requirement Removed

    What Changed

Officers are no longer required to maintain a full OCP set solely because of rank.

    What This Means

    • Officers only need OCPs if their duties or mission require them

    • The previous mandatory requirement (with a 9 Oct 2025 deadline) is officially removed

This reverts to the pre-2025 standard.

🎧 Personal Electronics Now Strictly Limited

    New Restrictions

The Air Force clarified and tightened rules on electronic devices while in uniform.

    Not Authorized

    • Earbuds, headphones, or earpieces during normal duties

    • Using phones or devices while walking in uniform

    Authorized Exceptions

    • Official duties

    • Emergencies

    • Public transportation travel

    • Individual PT while wearing PT gear

    • Hands-free use while driving (if local policy allows)

Military customs and courtesies always take priority.

Bright or trendy colors remain prohibited.

A new visual guide was added to eliminate confusion.

This applies to OCP, flight duty, and two-piece flight duty uniforms when approved.

    🧾 What Did NOT Change

These policies remain exactly the same:

    • Combat boot height: 6–12 inches (compliance by 30 Sep 2026)

    • Shaving profile authority remains with unit commanders

    • Mustache limits and grooming standards unchanged

    • Nail polish rules unchanged

    • Eyelash extensions remain restricted

    • Call signs on flight duty uniforms remain authorized

🧭 Command Message From the Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff emphasized that:

    • Uniform standards reflect professionalism and readiness

    • Unauthorized wear undermines discipline

    • Compliance is the responsibility of every Airman

This update is about clarity and enforcement, not experimentation.

    ⚠️ What Happens Next

    • This guidance is effective now

    • The official AFI 36-2903 publication is still pending

    📌 If you wear OCPs:

    • Recheck your patches

    • Verify your bag colors

    • Rethink electronics use

    • Review sunglasses and watch cap rules
