According to a Department of Defense memorandum dated 30 September 2025, new facial hair grooming standards have been implemented across all branches of the force. The guidance emphasizes readiness, safety, and equipment compatibility. Here’s what the memo states 👇

🛡️ Purpose of the Standards
The memo highlights that grooming compliance is essential for:
✅ Proper fit of protective masks and respirators
✅ Defense against CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) threats
✅ Firefighting and disaster response missions
✅ Ensuring force deployability
📝 Accession Standards
All applicants, including prior service, must meet grooming standards before accession.
Those who cannot comply will be deferred until they do.
👨✈️ In-Service Standards
All personnel must remain clean-shaven.
Sideburns must end above the ear opening.
Beards and goatees are not authorized unless specifically approved.
Mustaches are permitted but must be neatly trimmed, not extending past the corners of the mouth or into a mask seal area.
Special Operations Forces may request modifications for mission needs, but must be clean-shaven in CBRN environments.
🏥 Medical Accommodations
Reverts to pre-2020 standards.
Only temporary profiles (e.g., pseudofolliculitis barbae) may be granted.
Approvals are limited to 12 months with a treatment plan.
Permanent conditions will be evaluated for administrative separation.
🙏 Religious Accommodations
Reverts to pre-2010 standards.
Religious waivers are generally not authorized.
Requests require case-by-case review under DoDI 1300.17.
Approvals are limited to non-deployable, low-risk roles.
🎓 Training & Certification
All personnel must complete annual mask-fit training.
Training completion will be tracked and reported by units.
🌍 Deployment & Tracking
Noncompliance (refusal, failed fit tests, or denied waivers) will result in non-deployable status.
Repeated noncompliance may result in administrative separation.
📅 Implementation Timeline
Each service will submit an implementation plan within 60 days.
Final directives will be issued within 30 days of plan submission.
